The history of the Stern family dealership begins in the late 19th century in Gothenburg, Sweden with the shipping company Oscar Emanuelson Rederi Ltd., whose wife, Clara-Wilhelmina Emanuelson, was the first generation trader. With subsequent generations, the company name changed to become SternArts Ltd. which was founded in 1974, also in Gothenburg. The dealership was passed to the latest generation in 2003 and is today owned and operated by Bjorn Stern.
Bjorn Stern has been a financial backer to galleries in New York and Berlin since the late 1990s. He is an acquisitions agent for several international art museums and he advises a select group of private art collectors. His specialty is Impressionist and modern art with a particular focus on works of the early 20th century Avant-garde. A curator of specialist historical shows, he is also a collector of contemporary art with a keen interest in the works of international emerging talent.
SternArts Ltd. works with a team of international independent scholars, who regularly frequent London on research projects and special assignments. SternArts Ltd. core activity is within secondary art market material from mainly Europe and America, spanning four centuries.
